The “Peaceful-Warrior”, Anti-bullying School Program - is the Yukon Academy of Martial Arts Project created by Sensei Vitold Jordan, the Bully Expert (certified by Verbal Judo Institute) and a martial-artist in Aikido, Tai-jutsu, and Iaido in which Sensei Vitold holds 7th Dan degree black belt. The “Peaceful-Warrior”, is not like most anti-bullying programs that just offer statistics on the significance of the problem and scholastic old-tired advice  like “ignore it,” “walk away,” “fight back,” and “tell the teacher”(that doesn’t work). Instead, it provides specific training on HOW to develop a “bully shield” and HOW to verbally defend yourself if attacked. It is a very practical 10hrs self-defense Course for children/youth/students, enhancing their self-discipline, confidence, and will-power; a holistic empowerment through all aspects of “Oneness”- Body-Mind-Spirit. We teach non-violent approach to the conflict resolution through non-aggressive, non-competitive martial arts (“Yeshua-Do”; aikido, aiki-ju-jutsu, tai-jutsu) training, practical “Tuning the Mind” meditation and verbal self-defense skills. Most of the teaching is based on building self-confidence and leadership skills which empowers students to deal with difficult and stressful situations which can be encountered in daily life.
Our Program is focused on teaching children/youth a new approach to conflict through a “Verbal Defense” as a priority, also offering very practical self-defense skills (Yeshua-Do principle: avoidance, deflecting and re-directing attack, through minimum effort into maximum efficiency and effectiveness) combined with non-violent philosophy where overcoming intimidation or bullying, and “victim syndrome” is the key to personal victory, thus preparation for facing conflict and confrontation. It also encourages young people to master their moods/emotions, to put aside the stresses of life, and move towards healthier paths of life and understanding importance of: self-discipline, safety, unity, right relationship, avoiding drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, etc. So, the training in such modern self-defense art helps to rise in youth self-worth, respect, peacefulness, and fearlessness as well as encourages towards positive change, healthy living and thoughtfulness to others, their surroundings, and nature. We are going to keep a right balance between practical and theoretical lessons so students will enjoy variety of teaching with good physical activity.

The verbal and the physical skills run along the entire continuum, and therefore must be trained together, whether they are: 
1. Responding to changing levels of distance and awareness 
2. How to determine when words alone have failed and action must be taken 
3. How to defensively stand and position yourself 
4. Non-aggressive defensive hand and arm positioning 
5. De-escalatory verbalization in the midst of action 

Bundling the skills means knowing how to talk and act in the midst of conflict. Those are crucial skills, regardless of your field of work, so take a time to master it.

As we have already observed running our Anti-bullying school programs, children and youth are unable to concentrate on the theory alone longer than 10-15min. and easily become bored. The best results are obtained by delivering the theory/philosophy in a small dozes during practical physical activity in non-violent self-defense discipline. Since the principles of practical and the verbal self-defense which we teach perfectly correspond with each other, students have no problem to connect them as one teaching and learn to apply them with interest and attentiveness.  

The practical 10hrs Peaceful-Warrior Course is offered to local schools in the Yukon and can be run at the gym through different grade groups as PE classes. The maximum number of students at the class can be 25 at once, with additional supervision of the class teacher.

Each class includes:

1.     Building Confidence Lessons – motivational basic teaching on self-improvement, living as a Peaceful-warrior by mastering body/mind through the spirit of excellence, and leadership skills. (this takes about 10min)

2.     Understanding Bullying – here students will learn the basic lessons on how to deal with bullying combined the practical non-aggressive philosophy and theory of verbal self-defense, and analyze of the conflict and its peaceful resolution through re-direction of negative words and behavior. (this takes about 10min)

3.     Empowering Body through Physical Training & Mastering Warrior Skills; each class includes at least two/three practical self-defense techniques (this takes about 45min):

Basic description of physical activities – the same for each class

·        a Peaceful-warrior warm up exercises;

·        stretching and breathing;

·        being like WATER Principle;

·        learning coordination, balance, posture, motion, falls/rolls,

·        ethics and non-violent philosophy and verbal principles of defense (“bully-prove-shield”) in action,

·        Practical non-aggressive Self-defense techniques (Yeshua-Do [“Aiki”] principles:

-         TAI-SABAKI (body movements) - Principles of avoidance, deflecting, re-directing attack, and harmonizing with opponent.

-         Immobilizations – IKKYO, NIKYO, SANKYO

-         Throws – KOKYU-HO, KOTE-GAESHI, SHIHO-NAGE, IRIMI-NAGE,  KOKYU-NAGE

-         Combinations; Practical application against 1, 2 and 3 opponents!

There’s an old saying:”If there is no struggle, there is no progress,” and we must struggle to combat the bullying epidemic on all scales. Changes in laws, the way we think, and ultimately our behaviours are difficult to create, yet that is the challenge ahead of us. We need new and innovative solutions to combat bullying, solutions that protect young people by empowering school leaders and responsible adults everywhere to create safe environment for each child.

First of all, we must better equip educators – teachers, professionals and adults who have a role in carrying for our youth – with the funding and training they need to keep each child safe and secure. Bus drivers must also be trained and empowered to safeguard the children in their care. School infirmaries must be properly staffed, and each medical staff member must be properly trained to identify and treat the emotional trauma of bullying – social anxiety, substance abuse, and a sudden drop in academic performance.

Administrators and teachers must learn to put more attention to bullying, be fully prepared to deal with a problem in their schools and drop down their passivity and indifference! These educators play key roles in managing the front lines of bullying by copying with situations of physical and emotional violence, addressing situations with students and their parents, and fostering an environment of tolerance and inclusivity in their classrooms and playgrounds. These educators must be equipped with training and tools they need to break existing cycles of bullying and to prevent countless more before even start.

Parents and other adults also have to stop be passive but to be leaders and set right examples for all children with moral conduct and ethics.

Stopping bullying means real liberation for each child. It means activating the power and strength and intelligence that is within each child. We all know what it feels to be left out, ignored, name-called, and made to feel unworthy of people’s respect and attention.

As a martial artist I also understand what it is like to embrace that moment of empowerment, to feel safe and secure, to feel ready and able to pursue your greatest hopes in life, to awaken the ‘giant’ within. I am always ready to do my part to ensure that each and every young person in the Yukon has the opportunity to embrace such challenge and moment and to make a difference.
